Abstract The arrangement design of a submarine is dependent on the data of the parent ships and experts’ experiences. Delay in design can occur when there are missing data or when experts are absent. In addition, problems in the arrangement design of a submarine are difficult to solve because various compartments and equipment are placed on the limited space called pressure hull, and because there can be numerous alternatives for the arrangement design. Thus, there is a need to accumulate data regarding the parent ships, experts’ experiences, and design rules as a systematic structure, and the demand for optimization of the arrangement design is increasing. For this, an arrangement method of the submarine compartments and equipment based on an expert system and an optimization technique was proposed in this study. First, a template model for the arrangement design of a submarine was proposed. Second, an expert system that can systematically computerize experts’ experiences and knowledge was developed. Third, an optimization method that can yield a better arrangement design was proposed after formulating a submarine arrangement problem as an optimization problem, and solving it with the use of an efficient optimization algorithm. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, a prototype program consisting of an arrangement template model, an expert system module, and an optimization module was developed. Finally, this method was applied to a problem with regard to the arrangement design of a small submarine. The results showed that the proposed method can be used as a new tool for the arrangement design of a submarine.
