Abstract As many welding activities are required in the process of assembling blocks in shipyard, the companies continue to try to automate these tasks. This study focuses on an efficient sensing of seam trajectory for the automation of welding. It is decided to use a laser sensor that is better in efficiency and reduced working time by comparing several sensors. Algorithms and robot commands are proposed to recognize seam trajectory using the laser sensor. The algorithms and commands are applied to the actual welding activities and it is confirmed that the laser sensor has better efficiency than a conventional touch sensor.
